In later Middle English, especially in more easterly dialects (including Scots) an increasing number of borrowings from the three very closely related languages Dutch, Flemish, and Low German entered English, through widespread settlement of speakers of these languages in coastal towns, and many of these find their way into the standard language, such as reef, brackish, smile, trade.
